Terms of Use

OnceUponaBookshelf

Last updated: 3 August 2026

These terms cover your use of the OnceUponaBookshelf iOS app. By using the app you agree to them. The app is provided by Luke Welch, United Kingdom ([email protected]).

Who may use it

The app is intended for parents and guardians to use with their children. You must be 18 or over to buy a subscription or audio credits. Children should use the app with an adult.

What you get

Traditional Tales and the podcast directory are free and need no subscription. Writing new, personalised stories is also free for everyone, with a short ad shown while the story is written unless you have Remove Ads. Because that ad is served during the same flow a child might be holding the phone for, generation is gated behind a simple grown-up check first, so a parent confirms before the ad is shown. Adding spoken narration to a story uses audio credits, bought separately.

Remove Ads

  • Remove Ads is an optional, yearly auto-renewing subscription that turns off the ad shown while a story is written. Current price is shown in the app before you buy.
  • It has no effect on story writing itself, which is free with or without it.
  • Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase.
  • It renews automatically at the same price unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of the current period.
  • Manage or cancel at any time in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your device. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
  • Fair-use limits apply to story generation, subscribed or not, to prevent abuse. These are generous and are not intended to affect ordinary family use.

Bookshelf Unlimited, an earlier subscription that made story writing itself require a subscription, has been retired and is no longer available to purchase. If you already have it, it will not renew again.

Audio credits

  • Audio credits are a one-off purchase, not a subscription. One credit adds narration to one story.
  • Credits do not expire.
  • Once a story has been narrated, you can replay that audio as often as you like at no further cost.
  • Because credits are consumable digital content delivered immediately, they cannot be restored on a new device and are not refundable once used, except where the law requires otherwise.

Refunds

All purchases are handled by Apple, not by us. Refund requests go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something has gone wrong, please contact us as well and we will do what we can to help.

Stories created with the app

Stories are generated by AI to your prompts and are yours to read, keep, print and enjoy with your family. Please note:

  • AI-generated text can occasionally be odd, repetitive or not quite what you asked for. We recommend reading a story before sharing it with your child — the app is designed to let you do exactly that.
  • Similar prompts may produce similar stories for different people. We cannot promise a story is unique, and we make no claim of copyright over the text generated for you.
  • Do not use the app to create content that is unlawful, hateful, or harmful to children.

Traditional Tales and podcasts

Traditional Tales are retellings of classic public-domain stories. The podcast section lists third-party shows we think families may enjoy; we do not own, host, control or endorse them, and opening one takes you to another app or website governed by its own terms.

Availability

We aim to keep the app working but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. Story writing and narration depend on external services and an internet connection, and may occasionally be unavailable. Stories already saved on your device remain readable offline.

Liability

The app is provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law we exclude liability for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

Changes

We may update these terms. Material changes will be reflected here with a new date, and continued use of the app means you accept them.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
